Business owners often use “BAS” and “IAS” interchangeably. They assume the terms just describe the same ATO reporting obligation. In reality, the two forms serve different purposes and apply to different businesses. Mixing them up can lead to missed or incorrect lodgements.
A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is the form GST-registered businesses use to report and pay several tax obligations at once, including GST, PAYG withholding, and PAYG instalments. Most businesses lodge their BAS quarterly. Some larger businesses must lodge monthly instead.
An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) applies to businesses that aren’t registered for GST but still carry other reporting obligations, such as PAYG withholding on employee wages or PAYG instalments on business income. As a result, an IAS covers a narrower set of obligations than a BAS, since GST doesn’t come into it at all.
Here’s the simplest way to think about it. If a business registers for GST, it lodges a BAS, which bundles GST reporting together with PAYG obligations. If a business isn’t registered for GST but still needs to report PAYG withholding or instalments, it lodges an IAS instead. GST registration status really determines which form applies.

Lodgement frequency depends on turnover and ATO registration settings. Missing a deadline, even by a few days, can trigger penalties or interest charges. Businesses that grow past the GST threshold during the year also need to register for GST and switch from IAS to BAS reporting. Without ongoing bookkeeping support, that step is easy to miss.
Incorrect lodgements don’t just risk penalties. They can also distort a business’s understanding of its own cash flow, since GST collected on behalf of the ATO isn’t actually business income. Businesses that get this wrong sometimes spend money they were never entitled to keep in the first place.
